• Cardstock certificate holders are the workhorse format for conferences, training programs, and employee recognition. Made from (300 gsm–450 gsm) coated or uncoated cover stock, they typically feature a single interior pocket or four ribbon corners that hold the certificate at its corners without adhesive. Cardstock holders are the most economical option at volume and offer the widest printing flexibility; full-colour exterior and interior printing, foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV are all available. Choose cardstock when you're ordering large quantities for an event, when full-colour branding matters, or when budget per recipient is a constraint.
• Padded certificate holders use a faux leather (leatherette) or bonded leather cover over foam padding, with the certificate held by ribbon corners or a clear acetate sleeve inside. The padding gives visible thickness and a substantial in-hand feel that reads as premium in presentation photos. Customization is typically foil stamping or blind debossing on the cover. Choose padded holders for graduations, executive awards, board recognition, and any ceremony where recipients will be photographed receiving the document.
• Genuine leather certificate holders are the top tier and are used for flagship awards, donor recognition, and institutional diplomas. Decoration is limited to foil stamping, blind debossing, or engraving on a metal plate. Per-unit cost is significantly higher, so these are usually ordered in smaller quantities for select recipients rather than full event runs.
• Plastic and acetate holders provide rigid, moisture-resistant protection with a clear front for immediate visibility. They suit workplace compliance certificates, gym and training certifications, and any environment where the document is displayed rather than ceremonially presented. Branding options are limited to screen printing or a printed insert, so these are chosen for durability rather than presentation.

Printing and Personalization Options

This is where a custom holder earns its cost over a stock one. Available decoration methods depend on the cover material:

• Foil stamping: applies metallic or pigment foil (gold, silver, copper, and available colours) with a heated die. It's the standard method for logos and organization names on padded, leather, and cardstock covers, and it photographs well under ceremony lighting.
• Embossing and debossing: raise or recess your logo into the cover material without ink or foil. Blind debossing on leather and leatherette produces an understated, executive look. Embossing can be combined with foil (foil emboss) for maximum shelf presence on cardstock.
• Full-colour printing: (offset or digital, depending on quantity) is available on cardstock holders only, on both exterior and interior surfaces. Interior printing is underused and valuable: a printed congratulatory message, program schedule, or sponsor acknowledgment inside the left panel turns the holder into a keepsake rather than packaging.
• Spot UV coating: adds a high-gloss finish to selected design elements; a logo on a matte-laminated cover is the most common application.

Certificate Holder Sizes and Orientation

The standard certificate holder fits an 8.5" x 11" (letter) document; finished holder dimensions are typically around 9.5" x 12" to allow easy insertion. Diploma sizes such as 8.5" x 11", 11" x 8.5" landscape, and 6" x 8" are common in academic orders. Custom dies for non-standard document sizes are also available.

Orientation matters more than most buyers expect. Portrait holders open like a book with the certificate on the right panel; landscape holders open upward or side-to-side depending on construction. If your certificates are landscape (most diplomas and many award templates are), confirm orientation before approving the proof; it's the single most common error we see.

Protecting the Certificate Inside the Holder

Paperboard corners or ribbon corners hold the document at four points without any adhesive contact; the preferred method for archival-quality certificates and anything printed on parchment stock. PVC sleeves cover the full document face, protecting against fingerprints and dust, and suit holders that will be handled or transported frequently. Interior pockets (either a diagonal or full-width panel pocket) are standard in cardstock holders and allow recipients to easily remove the certificate for later framing. If certificates will be inserted on-site at an event, pockets and ribbon corners are faster to load than sleeves and are worth considering for large ceremonies with tight setup windows.
